Winter In Finland
DESCRIPTION: Winter In Finland... This book is an attempt to review the reactions of a young and technically advanced nation to the six or more months when it must grapple with the cold and darkness of a sub-Arctic climate. The book looks at the causes and consequences of winter and considers the means by which people seek refuge from ice and snow, mount assault upon them and contrive to enjoy them. The struggle with ice at sea is a saga in itself. The development and deployment of Finland's icebreaker fleet are discussed: one of the positive consequences of the winter experience has been the rise of Finland to prominence as one of the world's leading icebreaker producers. The obstruction of snow poses other problems. So does the provision of adequate heating and lighting in a high-latitude land, with short winter days and with limited domestic supplies of power. The ski and the sleigh, the earliest Finnish remains of which are at least 7,000 years old, have acquired a new meaning for a country which has developed an enthusiasim for winter sporting second to none.
