DESCRIPTION: Through Kirton Tunnel... A railway journey from Sheffield to Cleethorpes. Stephen Gay first became interested in railways at the age of 10 in 1971 and spent many hours 'spotting' at Rotherwood sidings and Woodhouse near his home in Handsworth. Stephen joined BR as a 'Basic Trackman' in 1979 at the nearby Beighton civil engineers depot, where much of his spare time was spent taking photographs and listening to the reminiscences of the senior staff. Through railway privatisation he was made redundant by BR in 1995, Stephen than began the task of making a photographic record of the former Great Central Railway lines - Through Kirton Tunnel being his latest venture. He regularly gives illustrated slide shows to many varying groups and societies up and down the country. Currently, Stephen is a member of the Doncaster-based Pennine Railway Society, The Railway Correspondence and Travel Society, Great Central Railway Society and is an Honary Member of Friends of the Barton Line. Full of beautifil colour photgaphs and a wealth of information about every section of the route.
A really good read for those with an interest in industrial history, silverware, community or family history.
