The Pirates of the Spanish Main
DESCRIPTION: The Pirates of the Spanish Main... There have been pirates for almost as long as there have been ships, and there are still a few around even today. But the golden age of pracy was the seventeenth century along the Spanish Main. After the discovery of America, Spain laid claim to the whole of the New World and all its vast stors of gold and silver and precious stones. Other European nations disputed this monopoly and used pirates and buccaneers to wage war on Spanish American ports and shipping. The bucaneers were rough and lawless men, but there were outstanding sailors and navigators amongst them like Bartholomew Sharp. They also proved to be brilliant guerilla fighters on land, when under Henry Morgan, they invaded Cuba and Venezuala and destroyed Panama, the capital of the Spanish Anerican empire.
