DESCRIPTION: Birds of the Coast... The coast is the meeting place of the sea and the land. Since the sea is tidal the constant ebb and flow of water exposes wet areas of sand, mud, or rock twice a day which because of their very wetness are rich in marine life such as tube-forming worms, snails and cockles. This same marine life in turn represents the food of larger animals, particularly birds. So vast flocks descend to feed on the shore freshly exposed by the ebbing tide. Some birds will be migrating and only stay for a short time to replenish their reserves before flying on over the sea. Others will remain to nest.
