The Medieval Garden at Stafford Castle
DESCRIPTION: The Medieval Garden at Stafford Castle... The replica Medieval garden at Stafford Castle has been conceived and developed by the Friends of Stafford Castle and made possible by the generous lease of land by the late Lord Stafford. The construction would not have been possible without the immense physical work carried out by the Manpower Services Commission. The aim of the garden is the creation of the first of many relevant living exhibits illustrating essential aspects of everyday castle life in the later Middle Ages (c1400 - 1450 AD). This garden represents a unique project, being of characteristic medieval layout and planted solely with plants listed in the first English treatise on gardening The Feate of Gardenynge by Master Jon Gardener c.1400. By visiting the garden, visitors will appreciate an experience in garden history and design, and become more aware of the versatility of the ancient garden and its indispensable role in the self-sufficient medieval manor.
